Understanding Diabetes and its Daily Challenges
Diabetes is a chronic condition that needs ongoing attention and care. It affects how your body processes glucose, and people living with diabetes often need their blood sugar levels monitored, dietary planning, regular physical activity, and sometimes, medication.
Managing diabetes can be demanding. Making healthy choices and keeping to routines are vital to staying healthy.
Inspiro’s Diabetes Nurse Educator, Abi, has some strategies to help you manage diabetes effectively in your daily life:
Healthy Eating Habits:
Eat a variety of foods from all food groups, focusing on whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables. Avoid foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates and be careful of portion sizes. Eating at consistent times each day can help regulate blood sugar levels.
Regular Physical Activity:
Aim for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week and include two sessions of strength or resistance exercises. The 30 minutes can be made up of three shorter walks if needed. Activities like walking, cycling, or swimming can help improve blood sugar levels. Find ways to stay active throughout the day that suit your lifestyle and abilities, such as taking short walks, using stairs instead of elevators, and standing up regularly if you have a desk job.
Monitoring Blood Sugar Levels:
Check your blood sugar levels as recommended by your healthcare provider. This can help you understand how different foods, activities, and medications affect your glucose levels. Maintaining a log of your blood sugar readings, diet, physical activity, and any symptoms can help your healthcare provider adjust your treatment plan if necessary.
Medication Management:
Take your medications as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It is important to know the purpose of each medication you take and how it works, this knowledge can help you manage your condition more effectively. Your pharmacist can help with understanding medications and consult your doctor if you experience any side effects.
Stress Management:
Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to manage stress, which can affect blood sugar levels. Having a support network of family, friends, and healthcare professionals can help improve your emotional well-being.
Sleep:
Make sure you are getting enough sleep, try to get to bed before midnight, and aim for approximately 7 hours.
