Hey Nicole! So what made you want to be a dentist?

I was born with a cleft lip which resulted in many hospital visits where I engaged in direct interactions with dentists and surgeons who were receptive to my concerns and experts in procedure. From a young age, I have been inspired by them to provide the same quality healthcare to people in need.

Through placements and interacting with patients, I have found a true passion in working with each unique individual to achieve the best health/dental outcomes for themselves

What have you been up to since you received the scholarship?

Since receiving the scholarship in my first year, I am now in my fifth and final year of the Dentistry course. It has been an incredible journey, from learning theory and how to use basic instruments when I first entered the course, to now being in my second full year of clinical placements.

I am currently providing dental care to patients in north-west regional Victoria, and am really enjoying both patient interactions and technical aspects of placement.

I have also been involved with the national Australian Dental Students’ Association for a number of years, most recently as their Community Officer to organise programs that encourage dental students across the country to contribute to their communities and make positive impact on those around them

How did the scholarship funds make a difference for you?

The scholarship greatly helped me to purchase the compulsory equipment and instruments needed for me to complete practical sessions during the early preclinical years of my course.

This helped to alleviate my family’s financial stress which has already been exacerbated by the costs of my relocation to a regional town to study dentistry and fulfil my dream.

Looking forward, what’s next for you professionally?

I am excited to now be in the final stretch of my undergraduate course, and in the next 12 months I will be working hard towards becoming a qualified and registered dentist.

Graduation marks the start of a new chapter of truly being immersed in the world of dentistry, with much to explore beyond the important foundations provided by the university course.

I am very much looking forward to learning and developing myself as a clinician.

And finally, what advice would you give future scholarship applicants?

I would definitely encourage applicants to express their true selves. Tell the panel about your passions, interests, what sets your soul on fire. Be open, genuine and enthusiastic!
